Children and young people at risk of entering care and in out-of-home care OR children who have experienced significant trauma
At Mindbuilders, we work closely with young people who come from complex trauma background. The young person resulted from maltreatment (i.e., abuse and/or neglect) and/or trauma. Psychological problems often include Clinical Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar Affective Disorder. Their experiences of abuse and/or trauma also have significant impact in their daily functioning. These include negative impact on their brain (reasoning, problem-solving, verbal expression, memories, non-verbal emotional and relational experience, and physiological responses), sleep disturbances, nightmares, flashbacks, feelings of shame, worthlessness and hopelessness, “fight, flight or freeze” responses, and behavioural issues that are often viewed as challenging.
We carry out a comprehensive assessment (e.g., using standardised assessments such as Child Behaviour Checklist, Trauma Symptoms Checklist, Trauma Attachment and Belief Scale and other assessments as part of the comprehensive assessment) of the bio/psycho/social/cultural aspects of the young person and their significant others. We then provide individually tailored evidence-based interventions to young people and their families. These interventions include cognitive behavioural therapy to promote effective coping strategies, affect regulation strategies, sand play therapy, positive behaviour support and other interventions that are tailored to individual needs.
We also provide psycho-education and positive behavior support training to their families, carers, schools and agencies, and aim to improve the quality of life for the young person and their significant others.
